The 14 National Parks in the UK (15 including the New South Downs park) are part of a global family of over 113,000 protected areas and national parks, covering 149 million square kilometres which equates to approximately 6% of the Earth’s surface.

The UK National Park Authorities are linked to European National Parks and protected areas through the Europarc Federation which is a network of European protected areas with 360 member organisations in 37 countries.

There 14 (official) National Parks in the UK
 
  • National Parks in England -  Dartmoor National Park, Exmoor National Park, Lake District, New Forest, Northumberland National Park, North York Moors, Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Broads which has equivalent status to a National Park. The South Downs will become a National Park but has not yet officially been designated.
  • National Parks in Wales - Brecon Beacons National Park, Pembrokeshire Coast and Snowdonia National Park.
  • National Parks in Scotland - Cairngorms National Park and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs.
